Union City runs past Falcons in district matchup

Lake County was able to stay within striking distance early but strong second and third quarters by Union City led to an 80-41 win by the Tornados in Union City on Tuesday night in district play.
The Falcons got a balanced scoring effort with four points from Brady Smith and a three-pointer by Aikee Ward but trailed 18-11 after one quarter.
With the Lake County offense held to just a three-pointer from Ka’Devon Gross and three points by Ward as well a bucket from Cade Canier and a free throw by Xander Hertel, the Falcons were unable to catch the Tornados in the second frame and fell behind 37-20 at the half.
Ward scored seven and Canier tallied four to account for the third-quarter scoring by the Falcons as Union City tacked on 22 in the frame to take a 59-31 lead into the final frame.
Over the final eight minutes, Union City outscored the Falcons 21-10 to secure the win.
Ward led the way with 18 points while Canier added eight in the loss.
The Falcons return to action on Friday when Lake County hosts Dresden. Girls action begins at 6 p.m. with the boys games to follow.
