Dyer County season ends with loss to Wildcats

Dyer County was able to hang with the Wildcats early but the Fayette Ware offense had too much firepower as the Choctaw season came to an end with a 75-56 defeat in the Region 7-3A Semifinals on Tuesday night in Newbern.


Fayette Ware jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before the Choctaws got a bucket from Jamin Gauldin and a pair of Devin Hayward free throws to tie the game. The Wildcats built their lead back to 12-8 with a quick scoring spree but Dyer County answered to trim the deficit to 14-13 after a Tristen Seabourn putback. The Choctaws were able to stay within striking distance, cutting the Wildcat lead to 19-17 after a late Hayward bucket.

Fayette Ware opened its lead in the second quarter, opening the frame with a 10-2 run to build a 29-19 lead with 3:29 left in the half. Though Dyer County battled back with a pair of buckets from Ryker Hayes and another by Hayward, Fayette Ware built a comfortable 42-25 lead at the half.

The Wildcats built their lead to over 30 during the third quarter before the Choctaws rallied with buckets from Seabourn and Clay Dodds to cut the Fayette Ware lead to 67-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

From there, the Wildcats cruised to the 19-point win.

Gauldin led the way for Dyer County with 14 points while Grant West and Seabourn each added eight in the loss.

Fayette Ware advances to the Region 7-3A Championship Game where the Wildcats will face Dyersburg at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
