Coming off a win in eight innings less than 24 hours earlier in Adamsville, the Lady Choctaws made it two in a row to start the week as Dyer County’s softball team defeated Munford after scoring six late runs, 8-0, on Tuesday night in Newbern.

After retiring the Lady Cougars in order in the top of the first inning, the Lady Choctaws got on the board when Kierstyn Ray led off the bottom of the frame with a walk. After stealing second then advancing to third on an Evie Rogers lineout, Ray scored on a Katie Beth Caldwell flyball to put her team on top 1-0 after one inning.

Another 1-2-3 Munford inning followed in the top of the second then Dyer County added to its lead in the bottom of the frame. Natalie Armstrong doubled to lead off the inning then scored on an Addie Gibbons groundout to put the Lady Choctaws up 2-0 after two frames.

The Lady Choctaw lead remained at two runs until the bottom of the fifth when Dyer County more than doubled its advantage. Caldwell walked to lead off the inning then Emma Wray singled. Rylee Key, having only given up two hits in the circle herself, tagged the Munford pitcher for a three-run home run to left to extend the Lady Choctaw lead to 5-0 after five frames.

Dyer County put the game out of reach in the bottom of the following inning. Ray singled then scored on an Evie Rogers double to push the Lady Choctaw lead to six. After Rogers scored on a groundout, Key doubled in another run to give Dyer County an 8-0 lead heading into the seventh inning.

In the top of the frame, Lady Choctaw freshman Molly Kate Woody and the Dyer County defense sealed the win with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to get the victory.

Key led the way for the Lady Choctaws with a double and a homer and four RBI. Armstrong added a double and a single while Ray and Wray each had two singles in the win.

Key picked up the win in the circle, shutting out the Lady Cougars for five innings, allowing just two hits. Woody pitched the final two frames, allowing only one hit with three strikeouts.

Dyer County returns to action on Thursday when the Lady Choctaws host Westview in an non-district doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
