The three-time defending District 13-3A Champions held a
lead of a dozen at the half on Saturday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium,
but had to hold off a scrappy Bolton team which took a brief lead in the fourth
quarter before the Trojans battled back to take a 71-63 win over the Wildcats
in the Region 7-3A Quarterfinal.
With the Trojans ahead 42-30 heading into the third quarter, the Wildcats battled back into the game. Dyersburg’s offense was accounted for, mostly, by a pair of three-pointers from Jace Ward and two buckets by Isaiah Thomas. In the meantime, Bolton went on a tear, E’Derian Washington scored 13 in the frame to help the Wildcats cut the Trojan lead to 53-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats kept the moment through the early half of the
fourth quarter, taking a 59-58 lead midway through the frame. But, Dyersburg
answered in a big way with buckets from Ward, Jeff Cobb and Breyden Turnage to
go on an 8-1 run and take a seven-point lead with just under three minutes
left. Dyersburg’s defense allowed only a pair of buckets by the Wildcats down
the stretch while adding five to their side of the scoreboard to seal the win.
Cobb scored seven in the opening quarter while Ward added
six as the Trojans took a 19-14 lead after one.
The Trojans ended the first half strong in the second
quarter, getting seven from Cobb and five apiece from Ward and Turnage to take
their 12-point lead at the half.
Dyersburg was led by Ward with 24 points and Cobb with 19.
A.J. Higgins tossed in 10 in the win.
The Trojans advance to the Region 7-3A Semifinals for the
third straight season and will face Haywood at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the first
semifinal of the night. The winner of that game will earn a spot in the region
championship on Thursday as well as a spot in next week’s Class 3A Sectional
round.
