Dyer County played a tough first half on Monday night during
the Lady Choctaws’ Region 7-3A Semifinal battle but came up just short, falling
to South Gibson 52-39 to end the orange and white’s girls season.
The Lady Choctaws came out inspired in the first quarter as the Dyer County girls battled through a back-and-forth opening frame. The orange and white took a 9-7 lead with an Anitra Honore three-point play then got another bucket from the senior post to answer a Trinity Johnson bucket and go up 11-9 with 4:27 left in the opening quarter. But, South Gibson got three points from Serenity Johnson and Trinity Johnson to counter two Tykeria Kennedy free throws and take a 14-13 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets were able to build a more comfortable lead
during the second quarter, getting a host of free throws to go up 21-17 with
3:31 left in the frame. But, a Marley Morgan free throw sparked a 7-2 run that
was highlighted by a Zya Currie three-pointer. The run ended with two Kennedy free
throws to take a 24-23 lead at the half.
South Gibson’s defense set the tone during the third
quarter. Though the Lady Hornets struggled for points on their end during the
frame, the orange and blue defenders limited the Lady Choctaws to just two
points through the first seven minutes of the second half. Meanwhile, Jade Reed
scored five during the run which was capped by a Serenity Johnson three-pointer
with 1:45 left followed by a Teague trey with three seconds left to go up 37-26
heading into the fourth frame.
Dyer County cut into the lead early with a pair of Robinson
free throws but the Lady Hornets were able to stay just above the orange and
white’s pace in the fourth quarter. All three seniors – Kennedy, Robinson and
Honore – contributed to a strong final frame in orange and white as South
Gibson held off the Lady Choctaws for the win.
Kennedy led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 15 while
Honore and Robinson each scored 10 in the loss.
South Gibson advanced to the Region 7-3A Championship Game on
Wednesday to face Dyersburg at 7 p.m. at Dyer County High School.
