South Gibson had plenty of rallies in them but so did the Lady Trojans including a dominating first half which propelled Dyersburg to its third straight Region 7-3A Championship via a 45-34 win over the Lady Hornets on Wednesday night in Newbern.
The Lady Hornets on the board first with a Jade Reed bucket
with 7:17 left in the opening frame. But, that was all the South Gibson girls got
for the next nine minutes. In the meantime, the Lady Trojan defense kept the
orange and blue off the board while a trio of jumpers from Joya Crawford and a
three-pointer and layup by Kay Kay Strayhorn composed a 13-0 run to end the opening
frame and give Dyersburg a 13-2 lead after one.
South Gibson cut into Dyersburg’s lead early in the third quarter
but Dyersburg had an answer with treys by Strayhorn and Jordan along with a pair
of Maclin free throws to build the lead back up to 19 points with 4:16 left in the
quarter. South Gibson went on the offensive late in the frame thanks to five
points from Dunn to cut the Dyersburg lead to 10 points before a Maclin
three-pointer with 53 seconds left in the quarter broke the Lady Hornet run. The
Lady Trojans took their 38-25 lead into the final frame.
Dyersburg put the pedal to the medal in the opening moments
of the fourth quarter, getting a three-pointer from Jordan along with a bucket
and a Crawford jumper to take a 45-25 lead with just over six minutes left.
South Gibson put together a late run to cut the lead almost in half but it was
too little, too late as the Lady Trojans clinched their third straight Region
7-3A title.
Jordan led the way for the Lady Trojans with 12 while
Crawford added 11. Strayhorn tossed in 10 in the win.
Dyersburg will host Millington on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
in the TSSAA Class 3A Sectional Round in the Terry Glover Gymnasium.
