The defending state runner-up Lady Choctaws from Northview Middle School got their 2025 season underway on Monday afternoon with a dominating win over Haywood in the season opener, 15-1, on the road at Brownsville.

The Lady Choctaws picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run double from Kate Benedetto to put the visitors up 2-0 after a half inning.

Northview began to pull away in the top of the second inning with six runs. Lyla Beth Woody singled in a run after Rylee Price scored on a wild pitch during the same at bat. Woody then scored on an error to push the Lady Choctaw lead to five runs. Benedetto doubled again then scored on a fielder’s choice. Anna Reid Yates singled in another run before scoring on a wild pitch to push the Northview lead to 8-0 after an inning and a half.

After a run in the third which saw Ellie Permenter score on an error on a dropped third strike, Northview plated another run the same way in the fourth, this time with Emily Hall scoring to go up 10-0.

Haywood scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to keep the game going but the Lady Choctaws scored five in the top of the fifth thanks to Permenter reaching on an error to score one, an RBI double from Woody, a one-run base hit by Berkley Childress and two wild pitches to go up 15-1 on the way to the mercy rule win.

Woody led the way at the plate with two singles and a double with three RBI while Benedetto added a pair of doubles and an RBI. Yates had a pair of singles as well with an RBI.

Harper Peery allowed one run on three hits with 11 strikeouts in the win.

Northview returns to action on Monday, March 10 when the Lady Choctaws host Martin Middle at 5:30 p.m.
