Trojans close week with big win over McEwen

 

With spring break coming to a close, Dyersburg’s baseball team closed out a week on the diamond with a 13-2 win over McEwen at Rockabilly Stadium in Jackson on Friday afternoon.

The Trojans got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Evan Thompson reached on an error while Brett Horner walked and Alex Page singled. Moments later, Thompson scored on a passed ball then an E AUSTIN groundout allowed Horner to score and put the Trojans on top 2-0 after one inning.

McEwen was able to cut that lead in half in the top of the second but Dyersburg had an answer in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Horner walked then scored on a Page double. Will Leonard then doubled in another run to put the Trojans on top 4-1 after two innings.

Following a 1-2-3 top of the third inning, the Trojans had their big frame in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Wesson reached on an error then scored on a Logan Cohen single. Horner singled in a run as did Page. Moments later, Horner scored on a passed ball to put Dyersburg on top by seven runs. Page’s courtesy runner – Logston Morgan – scored on a passed ball then Wesson singled in another run. Later in the inning, Cohen drew a bases-loaded walk to take an 11-1 lead after four frames.

McEwen scored  a run in the top of the fourth inning to keep the game going but Dyersburg scored two runs on a Wesson error in the bottom of the frame to seal the win for the Trojans.

Page had a double and two singles to lead the way for the Trojans at the plate.

Thompson picked up the win on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts in three innings of work.

Dyersburg returns to action on Monday when the Trojans open District 13-3A play when the black and gold host Dyer County at 6:30 p.m. at Tom Mathis Field.
