Dyersburg held the lead going into the fourth quarter with a five-point advantage but a pair of scoring runs by the Wildcats doomed the Trojans as Fayette Ware took a 51-42 win over the black and gold on Thursday night in Newbern in the Region 7-3A Championship Game.
The Trojans took a 37-32 lead into the final frame but the
Wildcats scored eight straight points over the first three minutes of the final
frame to take a three-pointe lead. Jeffrey Cobb got the Trojans back on the
board with a pair of free throws. A Tacarien Freeman bucket answered that only
to have Jace Ward cut the lead back to one with a bucket at 2:51 left in the game.
But, with the Trojan offense’s shots starting to not fall,
the Wildcats took advantage, ending the game with a 9-1 run to seal the region
championship for Fayette Ware.
Fayette Ware jumped out to an early lead but Dyersburg answered
with a pair of Jace Ward free throws to spark a quick run with Ward’s bucket at
the 1:56 mark of the first quarter putting Dyersburg on top. But, the Wildcats
retook the lead momentarily only to have Turnage put the Trojans back ahead
with a layup before a late Fayette Ware free throw tied the game at 9-9 at the
end of the first quarter.
A Jeff Cobb bucket put Dyersburg back on top 19 seconds into
the second frame but the Wildcats answered with a 12-4 scoring spree to take a
six-point advantage with 3:15 left in the half. But, with four points from Cobb
and a pair of free throws by Ward to lead the way down the stretch, the Trojans
cut the Fayette Ware advantage to 23-22 at the break.
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, Ward went
on a tear along with Cobb as the two combined to outscore Fayette Ware 9-5
through the tail end of the frame which started with five lead changes. A late
AJ Higgins bucket put Dyersburg on top 37-32 heading into the final frame.
Ward paced Dyersburg with 19 while Cobb added a dozen in the
loss.
Dyersburg will return to action on Monday night in the TSSAA
Class 3A Sectional Round when the Trojans travel to Munford with a spot in the TSSAA
Class 3A State Tournament on the line.
