The Dyersburg baseball team got its 2025 season off to a
successful start at home on Monday evening with an 8-3 win over visiting
Covington at Tom Mathis Field.
The Trojans wasted little time getting on the board as
Dyersburg scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. A Brett Horner single was followed two batters later by a Will Leonard RBI double to break the
scoreless tie. JP Noblin followed with an RBI single to give the Trojans a 2-0
lead after one inning.
Covington answered the Trojans in the top of the second with
a pair of runs to tie it at 2-2 after an inning and a half.
Dyersburg regained the lead in the bottom of the third
inning. A one-out walk to Horner was followed by a Leonard single to give the black
and gold two on with no one out. Noblin got his second RBI single in three
innings to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead after three frames.
The Trojans added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth
as Ryan Wesson was hit by a pitch then lifted for a courtesy runner – Bo Young –
who scored later in the inning on a passed ball to put Dyersburg up 4-2 after
four frames.
An RBI double from Covington’s Delashmit cut the two-run
Trojan lead in half in the top of the fifth before Dyersburg got out of the
frame with a lineout.
Bottom-of-the-fifth singles from Leonard and Noblin helped
Dyersburg pad its lead as courtesy runner Aiden Chandler scored on a wild pitch
later in the inning to give the Trojans a 5-3 lead after five innings.
The Trojans put the final nail in Covington’s coffin for the
day as a pair of walks with two outs proved costly. With Evan Thompson and
Horner drawing free passes, Alex Page followed with a three-run home run to put
Dyersburg on top 8-3 after six innings.
In the top of the seventh, Wesson and the Trojan defense worked
around a leadoff walk to get the next three batters – including a strikeout to
seal the win for the black and gold.
In addition Page’s three-run homer in the sixth, Leonard had
two singles and a double to lead the way for the Trojans at the plate while
driving in a run. Noblin also had three singles and two RBI in the win.
Horner picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on
five hits with four strikeouts. Wesson closed out the win with a four-inning
outing, striking out three while allowing four hits and one run.
The Trojans return to action on Thursday when Dyersburg
travels to Ripley to take on Brighton at 4:30 p.m.
