Trojans win slugfest with Brighton in Aaron Schuh Tournament

Coming off a win to open the season earlier in the week, Dyersburg moved to 2-0 on the year but it took a double-digit scoring effort and a walk-off single by Aiden Chandler to take the 10-9 victory over Brighton on Thursday at Ripley.

The Trojans set the tone early for what turned out to be a high-scoring affair. After a run by the Cardinals in the top of the first inning, Dyersburg answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame. Evan Thompson led off the frame with a single then advanced to third on a Brett Horner sacrifice bunt. Following a one-out walk by Alex Page, Will Leonard singled in Thompson to tie the game. After a JP Noblin single, Ryan Wesson grounded out but plated a run in the process to give the Trojans the lead. Ethan Austin then singled in two to put Dyersburg up 4-1 after one inning.

Brighton added a run in the top of the third then two more in the top of the fifth to cut deep into the Dyersburg lead and tie the game at 4-4.

Dyersburg bats woke up in the bottom of the fifth. Singles from Page and Leonard were followed by an RBI double by Noblin to push the Trojan lead back to two runs. Later in the inning after Austin was hit by a pitch and Logan Cohen singled to load the bases, Thompson drew a walk to bring home a run then Horner singled in two more to push the Dyersburg lead to 9-4 after five innings.

The Cardinals didn’t go quietly into the Ripley night, scoring five times in the sixth to tie the game at 9-9 heading into the final half inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Leonard drew a leadoff walk then Noblin singled to put two runners on. After a wild pitch on the second pitch of the following at bat, Wesson was walked to load the bases and create a force out at each base. Chandler then pitch hit and singled in Leonard on a 2-2 pitch to get the win for the Trojans.

Noblin led the way at the plate for the Trojans with a double and two singles with two RBI.

Thompson picked up the win on the mound for Dyersburg, allowing seven runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

The Trojans return to the diamond on Friday when plays at Ripley in the Aaron Schuh Tournament at 4:30 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
