Crockett County’s big innings lead to Dyersburg's downfall

The Lady Trojans took the lead early but a pair of big innings by Crockett County proved to be the difference as the Lady Cavaliers took the District 13-3A win by a score of 11-6 on Thursday night at Doug French Field.


After working around a one-out walk in the top of the first, the Lady Trojans came out swinging. Chelby Jordan led off with a single then Avery Hicks joined her on the basepaths two batters later with a base hit. Lily Kate Jones singled in a run then Dyersburg pitcher Addie Gatlin helped her own cause with a two-run single to put the Lady Trojans on top 3-0 after one inning.

Crockett County’s answer came in the form of a four-run frame two innings later. Back-to-back doubles from Bursey and White to lead off the top of the third put the Lady Cavaliers on the board. Carter followed with a single then Thornton singled in two more to tie the game at three runs each. A Crockett County groundout resulted in another run and a 4-3 Lady Cavalier lead after the top of the third.

The Crockett County offense continued into the fourth inning. A Solis double and a Bursey single were followed by a White groundout to score a run. Two batters later, Thornton drove in two with a single then Hoover doubled in two more later in the inning to give the Lady Cavaliers a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Dyersburg answered in the bottom of the fourth as a Kyleigh Littles double opened things up for the offense. Two batters later, Mallory McCaslin doubled her in to put the Lady Trojans on the board. Bella Turnage followed with a sacrifice bunt to cut the Crockett County lead to 9-5 after four innings.

The Lady Trojans picked up another run int eh bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Littles, cutting the deficit to 9-6 in Crockett County’s favor.


Crockett County got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Thornton to extend the Lady Cavalier lead back to 10-6.

The Lady Cavaliers then tacked on an insurance run on an error in the top of the seventh before sealing the win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.

Jordan, Hicks and Littles each had a double and a single to lead Dyersburg while Jones added a pair of singles in the loss.

Gatlin took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.

Dyersburg returns to action on Monday when the Lady Trojans travel to Covington at 6:30 p.m.
