Dyer County bounces back for Senior Night win

Coming off a loss at Briarcrest Christian on Monday night, Dyer County got back on the winning track on Tuesday evening at home, handing visiting Kennett a 6-5 loss on Senior Night thanks to a big sixth inning by the Choctaws.

The Choctaws and Indians were scoreless through the first two innings before Kennett got a run in the top of the third and four more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Dyer County looked to rally in the bottom of the frame with two outs thanks to a pair of Indian miscues. Everett Kuykendall and Gavin Lynn, both seniors, reached on separate errors to give the Choctaws two on. But, a flyout ended the Dyer County threat with the Choctaws still trailing by five after four innings.


The Choctaw offense finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Gentry singled to lead off the frame then Ozment did the same. But, a pair of outs surrounded Kuykendall’s walk which loaded the bases. Trey Starnes then reached on an error which scored a run, and then senior Jack Smith singled in a run. David Headtke singled in two more to cut the Kennett lead to one. Moments later, Smith scored on a passed ball before a Talon Messer single plated the go-ahead run before a strikeout ended the frame with Dyer County now leading 6-5 heading into the seventh.


The Dyer County defense was able to work around a leadoff error to get a fly out and a double play to end the game and secure the win.

Dyer County scattered seven hits among seven different Choctaws with Lynn’s double being the only one for extra bases.

Ethan Scroggins picked up the win in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh for the win.

Dyer County returns to action on Wednesday when the Choctaws close out District 13-3A play when they take on South Gibson at home. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
