Dyer County dominates in sweep of Obion County Central

Following a week marred by rainouts but one that did include a win on the road in Bartlett, Dyer County returned to District 13-3A action on Monday and Tuesday with a pair of big wins over Obion County in a home-and-home series with the Rebels.

The Choctaws took the 14-5 win over the Rebels on Monday in Troy before closing out the series with a 16-0 win in Newbern on Tuesday night.

Dyer County 14, Obion County Central 5

The Choctaws took an early lead then piled on the runs on the way to a nine-run win after five innings.

The Choctaws got on the board in the top of the first on an RBI double by Talon Messer. Later in the inning, Landon Daniels drew a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-0 lead after a half inning.

Central got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame on a Poston Essary RBI single to cut Dyer County’s lead to 2-1 after the first frame.

With one out in the top of the second, Dyer County’s offense got going. Jack Smith and David Headtke singled then Messer reached on an error to extend the lead to two runs. After Headtke scored later in the inning, Koleman Pride reached on a fielder’s choice to plate a run. The Choctaws tacked on another run when Daniels singled in a run to put Dyer County on top 6-1 after an inning and a half.

The Choctaws had another big inning in the top of the third frame. Smith doubled in a run then Messer singled him in to put Dyer County on top by eight runs. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Pride walked again, bringing home another run. A Daniels single resulted in two runs to put the Choctaws up 12-1 after the top of the third.

Central was able to get a couple runs back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double from Levi Stover, who scored later in the inning on an error to cut the Dyer County lead to 12-3 heading into the fourth.

The Choctaws got those two runs back in the top of the fourth as Nick Epperson doubled in two runs to put Dyer County back on top 14-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Stover singled and scored on an error then Essary singled in a run to cut the Dyer County lead to nine before Dyer County recorded three straight outs to end the game after the fifth inning.

Smith had a double and two singles to lead the way for the Choctaws at the plate while Headtke had a triple and a single. Epperson and Messer each had a double and a single with Gentry and Daniels each getting a pair of singles.

Stover had a double and a single to lead the way for the Rebels while Essary had a pair of singles.

Easton Ozment picked up the win on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of work. Drake Little took the loss for the Rebels on the mound, allowing six runs on five hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.

Dyer County 16, Obion County Central 0

An eight-run inning set the tone for the Choctaws for their second win of the week.

In the bottom of the first, RBI doubles from Headtke and Messer got the scoring going for the Choctaws while Gentry singled in another run. After Daniels singled, Everett Kuykendall reached on an error to plate a run. Two batters later, Trey Starnes singled in a run then Smith doubled in two more before Headtke singled in a run to put Dyer County on top 8-0 after one inning.

The Choctaws tacked on a run in the second inning with an RBI single from Daniels to go up 9-0 after two frames.

Dyer County did more damage in the third inning, scoring multiple times with two outs. Two hit batters – the second with two outs in the inning, lead to a rally as Epperson singled in a run as did Gentry. A two-run single from Daniels put Dyer County on top 13-0 after three frames.

After getting through the top of the fourth by working around a two-out single from Essary and a walk, the Choctaws ended the game with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Easton Ozment, a passed ball which allowed Mason Dudas to score and an error which allowed Epperson to reach and score a run accounted for those runs to clinch the win for Dyer County.

Daniels had a trio of singles in the win to lead the way for the Choctaws. Headtke and Epperson each had a single and a double while Gentry and Starnes each had two singles.

Essary and Braden Eason accounted for the only two hits of the day for the Rebels.

Kuykendall got the win on the mound for Dyer County, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout. Dawson Southerland took the loss for the Rebels on the mound, allowing five runs on four hits in 0.1 inning.

Dyer County returns to the field on Wednesday when the Trojans travel to Medina to take on South Gibson at 6:30 p.m. Obion County Central returns to action on Friday when the Rebels host Bradford at 7 p.m.
