Dyersburg dominates in sweep of Haywood


 

With the week off from District 13-3A play, the Trojans bounced back from a loss on Monday with a dominating performance at home on Tuesday, defeating visiting Haywood in a non-district doubleheader at Tom Mathis Field.

Dyersburg took the opening game of the doubleheader 15-0 then completed the sweep with a win in similar fashion, a 16-0 win in Game 2.

Dyersburg picked up the win in the first game of the day as JP Noblin tossed four innings of no-hit ball and was rewarded with plenty of run support in the win.

The Trojans got on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run triple by Alex Page to get the lead early. Page’s courtesy runner, Ty Seaton, scored moments later on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Logan Cohen singled in two runs then Evan Thompson plated another with a double.

After Cohen scored on a wild pitch and Thompson crossed after passed ball, Page got his second extra base hit of the inning with an RBI double to put the Trojans up 9-0 after one inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Thompson singled in a run then Bo Young plated another run by getting hit by a pitch to put the Trojans up 11-0 after two frames.

Two innings later, the Trojans put the Tomcats away. Cohen singled then scored on a passed ball. Young scored later in the inning on a passed ball. Noblin, after four innings of no-hit ball on the mound, brought the game to a close as his single led to the final two runs of the game to bring the mercy rule into play.

Noblin had a double and two singles to help his cause on the mound while Page added a triple and a double to the mix.

Noblin struck out eight of the 14 batters he face, accounting for two-thirds of the outs on the day.

Dyersburg 16, Haywood 0

After the Trojans didn’t allow the Tomcats to score during the second game as well, a nine-run fourth inning proved to be the end of things on Tuesday to enforce the mercy rule for the second straight game.

Dyersburg got on the board in the bottom of the first with a Brett Horner RBI single to put the Trojan lead at a run. Later in the inning, Will Leonard reached on an error to score a run and put the Trojan lead at 2-0 after one inning.

The Trojans doubled their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Thompson’s double scored a run then Horner singled him in to put Dyersburg on top 4-0 after two innings.

Back-to-back singles from Noblin and Ryan Wesson put two on for the Trojans in the bottom of the third. Aiden Chandler reached on an error to score a run then Cohen singled in two later in the inning to put Dyersburg on top 7-0 after three frames.

The Trojan offense erupted in the bottom of the fourth. Leonard was hit by a pitch and scored later in the inning on a passed ball then Noblin also scored on a passed ball before Wesson also scored on a passed ball to put the Trojans up ten runs.

Cohen singled in a run moments later then Jayce Ellerbrook walked later in the frame with the bases loaded to plate a run. Page singled in another run which lead to a bases-clearing triple which ended the game via mercy rule.

Chandler picked up the win on the mound, allowing just two hits on the day with a strikeout in three innings of work.

Thompson led the way for the Trojans at the plate with a double and a single and one run batted in. Horner and Cohen each had two singles for Dyersburg in the win.

Dyersburg returns to District 13-3A action on Monday when the Trojans host Crockett County at 6:30 p.m.
