Dyersburg opens week, defeats Lady Cougars at home


 

The Dyersburg softball team got an important week off to a successful start on Monday as the Lady Trojans made five early runs stand up against Munford to defeat the Lady Cougars 5-1 at Doug French Field.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Lady Trojans rallied. Back-to-back singles from Lily Kate Jones and Avery Hicks were followed by three more base hits, each scoring runs. Singles from Addie Gatlin, Kyleigh Littles and Izzie Odom plated runs to put Dyersburg on top 3-0 after one inning.

Errors became costly for the Lady Cougars in the bottom of the second. Mallory McCaslin reached on an error to lead off the frame, then Murphy Morgan made it aboard later in the inning on a two-out error. Jones made sure Munford paid for those miscues with a two-run double to give Dyersburg a 5-0 lead after two innings.

From there, Dyersburg was unable to string hits together, though at least one Lady Trojan was able to reach in each of the next four frames.

Munford was able to get on the board with an Asbill triple to lead off the sixth then a groundout to score her to cut the Dyersburg lead to 5-1. Dyersburg got a ground out and a fly out to end the frame with the Lady Trojans’ four-run lead in tact.

The Lady Trojans were able to work around a one-out walk with a trio of groundouts to get end the game and seal the win in the seventh.

Jones had a single and a double with two RBI in the win while Littles added two singles.

Odom allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout in seven innings of work to get the win.

Dyersburg returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Trojans hit the road for Newbern and a matchup with Dyer County at 6:15 p.m.
