Falcon baseball soars over Tomcats

 Lake County got back onto the diamond for the first time in a week and picked up its third win of the season on Tuesday afternoon in Tiptonville with a 9-1 win over Haywood.

Sawyer Roberson got things going for the Falcons in the bottom of the first as he walked then made his way around the bases with a pair of steals before scoring on a passed ball to put Lake County on the board. Cade Lanier also drew a walk but was brought home in a more conventional way with a Chance Estes double to put the Falcons on top 2-0. Later in the inning, Estes’ courtesy runner, Levi Howard, scored to put Lake County up 3-0 after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, Roberson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then Lanier drew another walk to give the Falcons two on with no one out. John Aydon Cochran followed two batters later with a two-run double then scored on a passed ball two batters later to push the Lake County lead to 6-0 after two frames.

Lake County picked up another run in the bottom of the third on a Roberson groundout to score a run and take a 7-0 lead following three innings.

The Falcons picked up two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Estes drew a walk to lead off the inning then scored on a Bryson Johnson sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Andrew Belt drew a bases-loaded walk to plate and run and send the game into the seventh inning with Lake County on top by nine.

Haywood was able to pick up its only run, an unearned one, with two out in the seventh before a groundout ended the game and sealed the Lake County win.

Cochran had a double and a single to account for two of the Falcons' three hits in the win. Estes had a double for the third Lake County hit.

B JOHNSON picked up the win on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out six over 3.2 innings of work.

Up next, Lake County travels to Humboldt on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
