Lady Falcons eliminate Three Oaks in WTAC Tournament opener
The Lady County Middle School softball team avenged last week’s loss to Three Oaks on the Lady Choctaws’ field as the Lady Falcons opened the West Tennessee Athletic Conference Tournament with a 13-8 victory over Three Oaks to eliminate the Lady Choctaws on Monday night in Ripley.
Lake County got on the board in the top of the first with a two-run
single from Braylee Mays to put the Lady Falcons on top early. LeAuna Hopper added
an RBI single later in the inning to give the green and gold a 3-0 lead after half
an inning.
Three Oaks had an answer in the bottom of the inning,
matching the Lady Falcons run for run. An Ava Prince single scored two runs to cut
the Lake County lead to a run. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Kilayna
Roberts was hit by a pitch to score a run and tie the game at 3-3 after one
inning.
The game didn’t remain tied long as the second batter of the
top of the second, Landri Stewart homered to left to put her team back on top
4-3.
Again, Three Oaks responded. Braelyn Fowler singled then
scored when Prince grounded out to tie the game at 4-4 after two innings.
In a game where the two teams traded offensive punches, Lake
County pulled back in front in the top of the third on a Hopper grounder which
was misplayed and allowed a run to score. Anzleigh Walls followed with a groundout
which also scored a run to give the Lady Falcons a 6-4 lead heading into the
bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Falcon defense was able to keep Three Oaks off the
board in the bottom of the third inning and the Lake County offense took
advantage. Bryleigh Walls singled then scored on a Mays flyout then Railee Hoekstra
singled in a run to extend the Lake County lead to 8-4 after the top of the
fourth.
Three Oaks cut into the Lake County lead in its half of the
fourth with an RBI single by Mattie Moore to cut the Lady Falcon lead to 8-5
after four innings.
Lake County pulled away in the top of the fifth inning. With
two on and one out, Bryleigh Walls sent an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall
to for a three-run home run. Hoekstra added an RBI double later in the inning
before scoring when Hopper reached on a dropped third strike to put the Lady Falcons
on top 13-5 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Three Oaks looked to rally in the bottom of the frame as a Fowler
RBI double cut the lead to seven then Moore singled in a two to trim the lead
to five. But, Bryleigh Walls struck out the next batter then got a groundout to
end the game and seal the win.
Bryleigh Walls had a homer and two singles with three RBI in
the win while Stewart added a homer and a single. Mays and Hoekstra each had a
double and a single for the Lady Falcons.
Fowler had a double and two singles to lead Three Oaks at
the plate and Moore had two singles.
Bryleigh Walls picked up the win, allowing eight runs on seven
hits with seven strikeouts. Prince took the loss, allowing 13 runs on 11 hits
with four strikeouts.
Lake County advances to the West Tennessee Athletic Conference
Tournament semifinals on Tuesday where they will face Northview at 5 p.m. in
Ripley.
