Lady Falcons sweep Greenfield, lock up fifth-seed

 

Lake County brought its regular season to a successful conclusion on Monday night as the Lady Falcons traveled to Greenfield where the green and gold swept a doubleheader from the Lady Jackets by a combined score of 26-1.

In a game which took three innings to come to conclusion in the doubleheader, the Lady Falcons set the tone for the day with an eight-run first inning.

An RBI single from Caren Johnson got things going in the top of the first for Lake County as she later scored on a passed ball. Mailee Hicks also scored on a wild pitch and Kensi Hays scored on an error to put the Lady Falcons on top by four with one out. Rachel Mahan scored later in the inning on a dropped third strike before Laken Chism grounded out to score another run. Mariah Valentine followed by reaching on an error to score another run and add to the Lake County lead. Johnson, who had the only other hit of the first inning for the Lady Falcons, doubled in another run to put Lake County up 8-0 after half an inning.

Lake County tacked on another run in the top of the second with a Kensi Hays RBI single to give the Lady Falcons a nine-run lead.

The Lady Falcons picked up a trio of runs in the third. Chism had an RBI single then scored on a passed ball. After Johnson double, Hicks singled her in to put Lake County on top 12-0 heading into the bottom of the third.

Greenfield was able to score a run in the frame to end the shutout but Hays struck the next batter out to bring the game to a close via the mercy rule.

Johnson led the way for Lake County with two doubles and a single and a pair of RBI.

Hays picked up the win, allowing just two hits and a run with four strikeouts.

Lake County 14, Greenfield 0

Lake County scored 13 times in the first two innings of Game 2 to put the game out of reach on the way to the win.

Valentine led off the game with a single then scored with Johnson reached on an error. Johnson then scored when Karsyn Hays reached on an dropped third strike. After a Kaitlin Jones triple, Kensi Hays grounded out to score a run. Back-to-back singles from Mahan and Gentri Beal led to both scoring on separate passed balls to put Lake County up 5-0 after half an inning.

Chism led off the top of the second with a single then Valentine was hit by a pitch. During a Johnson walk, Chism scored on a wild pitch. Moments later, Valentine scored on a passed ball then Karsyn Hays reached on an error to score Johnson. Jones then added an RBI double before scoring on a wild pitch. Beal added an RBI single later in the inning then her courtesy runner, Kabreonna Clayton, scored on a wild pitch before a Chism RBI single put Lake County on top 13-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Lake County rounded out their scoring for the day in the top of the third with an RBI single from Kensi Hays to put her team up 14-0.

The Lady Falcon defense then worked around a one-out error to seal the win with a fielder’s choice and a strikeout.

Jones had a double and a triple with one RBI to lead Lake County in the win at the plate while Beal and Chism each added two singles.

Kensi Hays picked up the win, allowing only three hits while striking out two.

Lake County will be in action on Thursday when the Lady Falcons travel to South Fulton for the District 14-1A Play-in Game at 6 p.m.
