TOMS softball answers DMS rally with run in sixth to win

Despite giving up five runs to open the game, the Dyersburg Middle School softball team battled back to tie the game after four innings before a late Three Oaks score gave the Lady Choctaws a 9-8 win over the Lady Trojans on Tuesday night at Doug French Field.

With two out in the top of the first is when the Lady Choctaws did their damage in the opening inning. Ava Prince singled in a run then Kilayna Roberts reached on an error to score another run. Isabel Lack tripled in two more runs two batters later. Lack then scored later in the inning to put Three Oaks on top 5-0 after a half inning.


Dyersburg went to work playing catch-up as Lilly Hicks reached on an error then scored two batters later when Hinleigh Spoon reached on another error to cut the Three Oaks lead to 5-1 after one inning.

The Lady Choctaws got one of those runs back in the top of the second inning. Braelyn Fowler singled then scored later in the inning to put Three Oaks on top 6-1 after the top of the second frame.

The Lady Trojans cut deep into the Three Oaks lead in its half of the second frame. Desleign Strayhorn reached on an error then Anna Bailey walked. Utilizing her speed, Strayhorn scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to four. Tinley Newsom followed two batters later with an RBI single before scoring later in the frame on a passed ball to cut the Three Oaks lead to 6-4 after two innings.

After neither team scored in the third frame, Three Oaks again rallied with two outs in the top of the fourth. Prince doubled then scored on a passed ball. Roberts then reached on an error to score a run before being called out trying to score later on the same play to give the Lady Choctaws an 8-4 lead after three and a half innings.

The Lady Trojans answered in the bottom of the fourth with their big inning of the day. Bailey walked then scored on a passed ball later in the inning while Hicks reached on an error and scored on a passed ball as well. Newsom also drew a walk and scored later in the frame on a passed ball to cut the Three Oaks lead to one run. Paisley Wilson grounded out but drove in the tying run to send the game into the fifth with the score knotted up at 8-8 after four frames.

Lack led off the fifth with a singled then advanced to second on an error. After moving to third on a groundout, Allison Bolf grounded out to score Lack and put Three Oaks on top 9-8 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Three Oaks was able to work around a leadoff single from Strayhorn and a one-out walk by Stephany Butler to get a pair of ground balls, resulting in the final two outs to secure the win.

Lack had a triple and a single with two RBI to lead the way for Three Oaks while Prince had a double and a single with one run driven in.

Newsom, Strayhorn and Spoon each had singles for the Lady Trojans.

Prince took the win, allowing eight runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in the five-inning complete game. DMS’ Hicks took the loss, allowing nine runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Both pitchers allowed only one earned run and the rest were unearned.

Three Oaks returns to action on Thursday, April 10 when the Lady Choctaws travel to Haywood at 5 p.m. Meanwhile, Dyersburg returns to action on Monday, April 7 when the Lady Trojans host Brighton at 6 p.m.
