As the postseason for his senior season just a day old, Dyer
County senior pitcher Landon Willis secured his plans for beyond high school as
the Choctaw righty signed with East Central Mississippi on Friday afternoon at
Dyer County High School.
“I feel great and I am ready to get down there,” Willis said
following his signing ceremony on Friday afternoon. “I’m not ready to graduate
but I am at the same time.
“I’m just excited to get down there and play. I’m super-excited
about this new chapter and I want to see what happens.”
Willis talked about what made him choose to attend East
Central Mississippi next fall.
“When I stepped on the campus, met the coaches and met some
of the ballplayers, it felt like a culture I was ready to be a part of,” Willis
explained. “And a culture I was ready to go play in as soon as I could.
“It was just somewhere I would love to play.”
Dyer County Head Coach Derek Hinson said the Warriors are
getting a competitor.
“He’s a guy who goes out there every day and gives his team
a chance to win,” Hinson said. “It’s not every day you get a guy that hits 91,
92 and that’s going out there starting.
“Any day – a good day or a bad day – he’s giving us a chance
to win.”
Hinson praised Willis’ work ethic.
“I can’t wait to watch him pitch at the next level,” the Choctaw
head coach said. “His work ethic is unbelievable. Every day he comes in to work.
“And, he is a good teammate. I am super-excited for him.”
Dyer County has clinched a spot in the District 13-3A
Championship Game which is set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Newbern.
