Coming off her senior season at Dyer County High  School, Lady Choctaw basketball standout Tykeria Kennedy will continue her basketball career at the next level as she signed with Dyersburg State Community College on Wednesday afternoon.

“I feel good,” Kennedy said following the ceremony which saw her and three other athletes sign to continue their careers at the college level. “It’s a great opportunity to continue my basketball career.”

Kennedy said she liked the community around Dyersburg State but there was also another factor in her decision to become a Lady Eagle.

“It gives me an opportunity to play with my former teammate, Sanayah Starks,” Kennedy explained.

Starks, who was Kennedy’s teammate at Dyer County for three years, will be a sophomore with Dyersburg State after signing with the Lady Eagles last spring.

“She works hard on both ends of the floor,” Dyer County Head Coach Derek McCord said. “She’s been a tremendous leader for us for four years.

“I’m excited to see her joining the backcourt with Sanayah Starks. They played together before so it will be exciting to see them in the same backcourt once again.”

McCord said Kennedy’s everyday approach has meant a lot to the program.

“She approached every day at practice wanting to come in and work hard,” McCord explained. “She had an outstanding attitude and was very coachable.

“She makes others around her better which is one of the best traits a point guard can have – making those around you better, sharing the ball.”

The Lady Choctaws’ head coach said Kennedy is a very unselfish player.

“We had games where we had to tell her ‘TK, shoot the ball more’,” McCord added. “That shows how unselfish she is.

“She made the adjustment from shooting guard to point guard this year with ease like we thought she would. We’re excited to follow her progress.”

McCord added Kennedy is going to a very solid program led by DSCC Head Coach Nathan Daume and his assistant, former Lady Choctaw and Lady Eagle Hanna Box.
