Crockett County had a big lead going into the sixth inning but
the Lady Trojans chopped that down to size in their half of the frame, trimming
the lead to two before the Lady Cavaliers answered with an insurance run in the
bottom of the frame on the way to a 7-4 win in the consolation bracket of the
District 13-3A Tournament at Newbern on Monday evening.
The Lady Cavaliers scored one in the first, three in the second
then individual runs in the third and fourth to take a six-run lead after four
frames.
Neither team got on the board in the sixth but Dyersburg made things interesting in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles to open the frame from Avery Hicks and Lily Kate Jones got things going for Kyleigh Littles, who singled in a run to put the Lady Trojans on the board. Addie Gatlin singled in a run then both runners moved up after a sacrifice bunt from Murphy Morgan. Izzie Odom drew a walk to load the bases but Mallory McCaslin hit into a fielder’s choice with the out occurring at the plate for the second out of the inning. Freshman Avery Gatlin then drove in her older sister and Odom home with a single to cut the Crockett County lead to two runs. A groundout ended the frame but Dyersburg had climbed back into it and trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Crockett was able to get one of those back in the bottom of
the frame with a Thornton RBI single. Dyersburg was able to get out of the
frame moments later after a sacrifice bunt and a double play to trail 7-4
heading into the seventh inning.
The Lady Trojans looked to keep their season alive in the top
of the seventh with a one-out single from Jones then Addie Gatlin reached on an
error with two outs. This gave Dyersburg two runners on and the tying run
coming to the plate in the form of Morgan. But, Crockett County was able to get
a strikeout to end the game and advance to Tuesday’s consolation bracket
finale.
Jones had four singles to lead the way for the Lady Trojans at the plate. Addie Gatlin added two singles and an RBI in the loss.
Addie Gatlin took the loss in the circle, allowing seven
runs (five earned) on 13 hits with five strikeouts in the Lady Trojans’ lone
senior’s final game in black and gold.
The loss ends the Lady Trojan season with a record of 9-12.
Crockett County will play Dyer County at 5 p.m. on Tuesday
in the consolation bracket final with the winner moving to the District 13-3A Championship
Game at 7 p.m. against South Gibson.
