Northview takes WTAC Softball crown with win over Ripley

The Northview Lady Choctaws continued their march through the postseason with an unbeaten record on Wednesday, defeating Ripley 5-3 in the finals of the West Tennessee Athletic Conference Class A Tournament at Ripley.

Ripley struck first in the top of the first inning with a run to take a 1-0 lead.

Northview was quick to answer in the bottom of the frame. Kate Benedetto drew a walk and Harper Peery reached on an error before Emily Hall singled in a run to tie the game. Three batters later, Lyla Beth Woody grounded out but the play wound up plating two runs to give the Lady Choctaws a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Ripley cut into the lead in the top of the third with a run then tied it in the fifth with another to knot the score up at 3-3 after four and a half innings.

Northview answered in the bottom of the fifth. Hall walked and B CHILDRESS singled before an RBI single from Woody put the Lady Choctaws back on top 4-3 heading into the sixth inning.

Northview tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a Benedetto double to give the Lady Choctaws a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame.

In the top of the seventh, the Northview defense worked around a lead-off single and a one-out walk to get the final two batters to secure the win and the WTAC Championship.

The Lady Choctaws scattered four hits to score their five runs with Benedetto’s double in the sixth the only extra base hit of the day for Northview.

Peery picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in the seven-inning complete game.

Northview will take part in next week’s region tournament.
