Choctaws take second in Kickoff Classic, Trojans place third

An early-season tradition continued on Monday at The Farms in Dyersburg as golf teams from across Northwest Tennessee converged on the course for the annual Kickoff Classic which began at 8 a.m.

When all the scorecards were tallied, a pair of boys teams finished among the top three as Dyer County placed second with Dyersburg only four strokes behind the Choctaws in third.

Jackson Christian School’s top four scored a combined 301 to take first place in the event.

The top overall medalist went to a local golfer – and a freshman – as Beau Thurmon shot a four-under 68 to lead the field amongst the male golfers.

Jarrett “Hoss” Harrison came off the course with a 75 while Seth LaRue had an 83 and Miller Williams added an 87 to account for the Choctaws’ 313 on the day.

For the Trojans, Jayce Ellerbrook lead the way with a 76. Brett Horner shot a 78 and John David Morris added a 79 before Ryan Wesson came off the course with an 84 to account for the black and gold’s 317.


In girls’ action, Dyer County took third among the 14-team field with a 185 on the day. Kennedy Hill shot an 88 to lead the Lady Choctaws while Lily Flagg added a 97 for Dyer County.

Dyersburg’s Stella Madden shot a 98 while Cally Cook added a 111 to account for the team’s 209 on the day.


Dyer County hosts a trio of teams at The Farms on Tuesday as Union City, Halls and Gibson County come to town. Meanwhile, Dyersburg travels to Trenton. Both matches are set to start at 4 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball. DAC Director Patrick Holden, talked about how this agreement came about. “Tyler Baker with Grand Slam Baseball reached out to me about wanting to bring some travel baseball tournaments this fall to Dyersburg,” Holden recalled. “We have always been pretty much softball only, rec softball and travel ball. “So, that’s when I reached out to Kyle Hinson, president of the Diamond Youth Baseball Organization.” Holden explained that when he learned most of these travel baseball tournaments are two-day events, he reached out to the local DYB league for help and a chance to benefit both organi...
