Dyer County returns home to open Region 7-4A play

The Choctaws (2-0) continued their undefeated start to the regular season with a 20-point win over Union City last Friday night on the road.

The loss, though, was not without cost as Dyer County junior running back Korey Taylor went down with an injury during the third quarter and did not return to action. Taylor was diagnosed with a torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament.

Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubruiel said this is a good life lesson for his players.

“Don’t take any days for granted,” Dubruiel explained. “You look at the injury to Korey and realize we aren’t promised anything and you have to work hard and play hard to get where you want to be.”

Moving into this week, the Choctaws make their 2025 home debut on Friday night when Dyer County hosts Hardin County (1-1) in Newbern.

The Choctaw head coach shared where he feels the Tigers concern him on offense.

“Offensively, they are very multiple,” Dubruiel said. “They can spread around and throw and then they bring everything in and run it well.

“The quarterback is a ball player.  A lot of stuff runs through him.”

Dubruiel pointed to his front seven when asked who needs a big game.

“We need a big night from our linebackers and defensive lineman,” Dubruiel added.

On the other side of the ball, the Tiger defense likes to play physical.

“They are a physical bunch on defense,” the Choctaw head coach said. “They stack the back and dare you to throw it.

“They have linebackers that run to the ball well and tackle well also.”

With Taylor going down, it’s a “next man up” mentality for the Choctaws this week.

“We are going to put a lot Bryce at running back,” Dubruiel said. “He’s filling in so big shoes. If he stays up to the challenge, he could have a big night.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night in Newbern.
