Lake County storms past Fulton County for homecoming win

After falling to the Gleason Bulldogs last week, the Lake County Falcons looked to right the ship against the Fulton County (KY) Pilots. In a game that saw the Falcons get down 26-6 in the third quarter, Lake County stormed back to defeat the Pilots 47-34 in Tiptonville on Friday night.


Lake County got the ball at their own 49-yard line midway through the 3rd quarter. On third-and-five, a Lanier pass fell incomplete. On fourth down, a Lanier run gained 10 for a first down. On third-and-three from the Pilots 4-yard line, a Lanier run got into the end zone for the Lake County touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, which made the score 26-12 Pilots. 

Lake County would then recover an onside kick at midfield. On the first play, a Lanier run got down to the Pilots 24-yard line. On the next play, a handoff to Gross went the rest of the way for the Falcons' score. The 2-point attempt was good with a run by Gross, which made the score 26-20 Pilots.

The Pilots got the ball at their own 36-yard line. On the second play of the drive, a Smith pass was intercepted by Nigel Clark and returned to the Fulton County 20-yard line. On the first play, a handoff to Gross went all the way for the Lake County touchdown. The extra point attempt by Landon Crockett was good, which gave the Falcons the 27-26 lead.

The Pilots got the ball at their own 20-yard line. On third-and-three from the 42-yard line, a Smith pass was completed to pick up a first down and end the third quarter. On first down, a Smith pass was tipped by Gross. On third-and-8, a pass to Keys came up two yards short, but the Pilots gained a first down via penalty. On the next play, Smith’s pass was intercepted by Lanier for a Lake County touchdown. The extra point was no good, making the score 33-26 Falcons.

Fulton County got the ball at its own 15-yard line to start the next drive. On third-and-10 from the 30, a Smith pass was completed to Thorpe to gain 16 and a first down. On second-and-10, a pass to Kinney got down to the Falcons' 25-yard line. On second-and-three, a Smith pass was intercepted by Crockett for a touchback. On second-and-six, a Lanier run gained 17. On the next play, a handoff to Gross gained 12. On the next play, a handoff to Gross went 44 yards for the Falcons' touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, making the score 39-26.

Fulton County got the ball at their own 40 to start the next drive. On third-and-10, a Smith pass to Kinney got down to the Falcons' 28-yard yard-line. On first and goal, a Smith fumble was recovered by


Ricks and returned to the 34-yard line. On the first play, a handoff to Gross went all the way for the touchdown. The 2-point attempt was good, making the score 47-26 Falcons.

The Pilots got the ball at their own 45-yard line. On second-and-10, a pass from Smith to Kinney went all the way for a Pilots touchdown. The 2-point attempt was good, which made the score 47-34 Falcons.

The Falcons got the ball and were able to run out the remaining time on the clock to secure the 47-34 win.

However, Fulton County got the ball to start the game and was in control early.

On their second possession of the game, the Pilots began driving and got to their own 42-yard line before the quarter expired. On third-and-3, a handoff to Charles Keys lost a yard. On fourth down, a pass from Preston Smith to Goodman got down to the Lake County 39-yard yard-line. The duo connected on the next play to pick up 14 more yards. On third-and-20 from the 35, KJ Avery broke up a pass to make it fourth-and-20, where a Smith pass to Cooper Drake Thorpe picked up 22 for a first down. On the next play, a pass from Smith to Davarius Freeman found the end zone for the Pilots' touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, making the score 6-0 Pilots.

Jataveion Ricks took the ensuing kickoff to the Pilots 46-yard line. On second-and-7, Cade Lanier got down to the 22-yard line. Four plays later on first-and-goal from the 1, a Ka’Devon Gross rush attempt found the end zone for the Falcons' touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, making the score 6-6.

Fulton County got the ball at its own 39-yard line. On third-and-10, a Smith pass to Goodman was complete but made it fourth-and-three, but a Lake County penalty extended the drive. On third-and-five, a Smith run got down to the 17-yard line. On second-and-seven, a sack by Randy Demo pushed the Pilots back to the 26-yard line. On third down, a run by Thorpe got down to the 6-yard line with nine seconds to play in the half. On the next play, a Smith run got into the endzone for the Pilots' touchdown. The 2-point attempt was no good, making the score 12-6 Pilots at the half.

Lake County got the ball at the Pilots' 30-yard line after a big return by Gross. On second-and-five, a fumble was recovered by Keys at the 20-yard line. On third-and-1, a Smith sneak picked up just enough for a first down. On first-and-15, a Smith pass to Zayden Kinney went all the way for the Pilots' touchdown. The 2-point attempt by Freeman was successful, making the score 20-6 Fulton County.

The Pilots recovered an onside kick at their own 49-yard line. They picked up two first downs on the ground. A sack on second-and-10 made it third-and-14 from the Falcons' 30-yard line. A pass to Thorpe made it fourth-and-three, and a pass to Goodman gained five for a first down. On third-and-five from the 7, a handoff to Goodman went all the way for the Pilots' touchdown. The 2-point attempt failed, making the score 26-6, and helping set up the Falcons’ dramatic flurry of scores.

Lake County will host Region 7-1A foe West Carroll next Friday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
