Dyer County hosts South Side to celebrate Homecoming 2025

With five teams in Region 7-4A tied at 3-2 in region play and either 6-2 or 5-3 overall, some separation may begin to occur on Friday night as two of those teams – Dyer County and South Side – face off in Newbern as the Choctaws celebrate Homecoming 2025.

With the playoffs beginning and only three spots to be given to those five teams, games like the one in Newbern on Friday night are very important towards getting the four representatives from Region 7-4A.

“We hurt ourselves with two losses in the region,” Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubruiel said of how the Choctaws got into this position. “So, each week is a round in the playoffs.

“We are going to fight tooth and nail for everything and let the chips fall where they may.”

Speed will be a concern when the Hawks are on offense for the Choctaw defense.

“Offensively they have some guys that can move,” Dubruiel explained. “This includes receiver Greg Green and running back Braydon Wheldon.

“The quarterback, Gavin Stewart, is a good field general commanding the offense.”

Dubruiel pointed to where the big game will need to come from defensively for the Choctaws.

“It comes down to our front six being dominant and our back five being communicators,” the Choctaw head coach said.

On the other side of the ball, team speed is also a concern.

“Their front six are fast and physical,” Dubruiel pointed out. “The defensive line gets after it and linebackers fly to the football.”

The guys up front will need to lead the way according to the Choctaw head coach.

“Offensively, we need our five offensive linemen to lead the way and the skill guys to do what they are coached to do,” Dubruiel said.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night in Newbern.
