Dyer County Volleyball claims fifth straight district championship

For the fifth straight season, the District 13AA Championship flag will be raised in Newbern as the Dyer County Choctaw volleyball team defeated Crockett County in three sets to claim the title.


Crockett County got the lead early in the first set before a Rylee Key kill cut into the Lady Cavalier lead. An Emma Wray kill tied the game at 4-4 moments later then a Blair Acree block put Dyer County on top and was followed by another Wray kill. The Lady Cavs were able to retake a couple of small leads before a Katie Beth Caldwell kill tied the game at 11-11. Moments later, a pair of Key blocks put Dyer County on to 14-12.

Dyer County was able to build an 18-14 lead then take a 20-15 advantage following a Wray kill. Acree followed with a pair of kills to build a 22-16 lead before a Caldwell kill gave the Choctaws a 25-17 win in the opening set.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead early, Dyer County looked to control the second set. Crockett was able to hang around for a little while but an Acree kill and a Wray ace helped open up a 16-8 lead. Key’s kill later in the set put the Choctaws on top 23-11. Crockett was able to snag a couple points late in the frame to cut into Dyer County’s advantage before a Key kill sealed the Choctaws’ 25-13 win in the second set.

Crockett County led early in the third set before a quick run put Dyer County on top 4-2. The frame remained close through the set as kills from Erin Foster and Wray helped the Choctaws take a 16-12 lead. The Lady Cavaliers rallied to cut the lead to one point before a Dyer County timeout.


Coming out of the timeout, Dyer County went on a scoring spree as a Kierstyn Ray ace helped the Choctaws build a 21-18 lead. The net play sealed it for the Choctaws as a block and three kills from Key sealed the 25-18 win in the third set and secured the sweep and the district championship for the Choctaws.

Dyer County will host the Region 7AA Tournament on Monday, Oct. 13 with the Choctaws taking on Bolivar in the semifinal round.

Trojans headed to Region 7-3A Championship for the first time in 21 years

  Jason Peevyhouse JP Productions Sports Thanks to a stellar second half which saw the Trojans outscore Haywood 45-23, the Dyersburg boys will play for a region championship for the first time since 2004 after the black and gold’s 68-55 win over the Tomcats on Tuesday night in Newbern. "I think our kids were extremely engaged from the tip," Dyersburg Head Coach Blaine Mahaffey said. "I thought we rebounded well all night.  "And then, in the second half, when we were able to play a little bit better offensively, I think it showed up more." Trailing by nine at the break, the Trojans cut it to eight early in the second half but a three-pointer from Haywood put the Tomcats back up 35-24 with just over seven minutes left in the frame.
