The Dyersburg Middle School football team assured itself of another week on the gridiron as the DMS Trojans turned a two-point lead at the half into a 26-6 win over visiting Millington in the TSSAA Division III Class AA First Round on Wednesday night at J.C. Sawyers Stadium.

After going scoreless through much of the first quarter, DMS running back Triston Edwards broke free for an 85-yard run to the Millington 3-yard line. Three plays later, Edwards capped off the drive with a one-yard run to put Dyersburg on the board. Cooper Duggan then added the two-point conversion to put the hosting Trojans on top 8-0 with 7:57 left in the half.

The DMS defense forced a turnover on downs and Dyersburg looked to add to its lead but a Trojan fumble was recovered by Millington and returned for a 47-yard touchdown with 4:18 left in the second quarter. The Dyersburg defense stopped the two-point attempt to preserve the DMS lead at 8-6.

Dyersburg was driving late in the half before a fumble – the team’s third in the half – to keep the black and gold on top by two at the half.

The first DMS drive in the second half started off promising only to be ended by a fumble deep in Millington territory. But, a big loss on the ensuing Millington drive put the ball on the breath of the goalline for the visiting team. On the next play of the drive, Dyersburg threw the Millington running back for a loss in the end zone for a safety with 5:14 left in the third quarter to take a 10-6 lead.

The Trojans then made the most of the possession the safety created as Dyersburg marched down the field to score. The touchdown came on a 29-yard pass from Hudson Gadlege to Izaiah Glynn with 1:52 left in the third quarter. Duggan added the two-pointer to extend Dyersburg’s lead to 18-6.

Dyersburg then capped the scoring midway through the fourth quarter with a 28-yard run by Glynn with 4:12 left. Glynn then added a two-point conversion to give the home team a 26-6 lead.

The DMS Trojans will be back in action in the second round of the playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. against Brighton.
