A year after failing to reach the region tournament,
Dyersburg’s girls soccer team is one win away from punching its ticket to the
TSSAA Class AA State Tournament. The Lady Trojans defeated South Gibson for a
third time, defeating the Lady Hornets 3-0 in the Region 7AA Championship Game
on Thursday night at Dyersburg High School.
Other than a couple of shots on goal which were kept out of the
net by Dyersburg goalkeeper Grace Ann Webb, the first half saw the Lady Trojans
on South Gibson’s side of midfield for much of the half.
Dyersburg finally broke through as Haddy Manneh made a
leaping kick to her right, getting the ball past the South Gibson goalkeeper in
the process to put her team on top 1-0 in the 29th minute.
The Lady Trojans fans didn’t have to wait long to see their second goal of the night as Manneh tacked on a late first-half goal. The sophomore striker added a goal in the 36th minute to push the Dyersburg lead to 2-0.
The lead held at two goals until the half.
Nearing the midway point in the half, Dyersburg was able to
get an insurance goal to help keep the Lady Hornets at bay. Like the first two
goals, the third goal came from Manneh, who scored on a breakaway in the 55th
minute.
From there, the Dyersburg defense continued to keep South Gibson
off the board as the Lady Trojans sealed the region championship win.
The Lady Trojans will host the TSSAA Class AA Sectional Game
against Brighton on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in
Dyersburg.
