Lake County girls pick up first win, boys fall to Peabody

The Lake County girls team got their first win under new
head coach Sarah Tubbs on Thursday night, jumping out to a lead early and never
trailing on their way to a 48-40 win over Peabody in Tiptonville.
Behind the shooting of Mariah Valentine and Laken Chism, the
Lady Falcons jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening quarter. Though the Lady Tide
came back down the stretch, Lake County held them off and got a late three-pointer
from Chism to take a 16-11 lead after the opening quarter.
The Lady Falcons had a slight offensive lull in the second
half but maintained their lead thanks to their defense. A pair of Chism
three-pointers helped Lake County take a 26-24 lead at the half.
Lake County’s defense showed up strong in the third quarter,
holding Peabody to five points in the first eight minutes of the second half. In
the meantime, six points from Chism and five more by Valentine pushed the Lady Falcon
lead to 41-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
From there, Lake County held off the Lady Tide to take an eight-point
win.
Chism led the way for the Lady Falcons with 25 points while
Valentine added 17 in the win.
Peabody boys 82, Lake County 65
Though the Falcons led at the break, a strong second half by
the Tide pushed Peabody past Lake County.
A trio of three-pointers from Aikee Ward highlighted a pretty balanced scoring attack by the Falcons in the first quarter which saw the green and gold take a 29-13 lead after one.
Peabody’s defense picked up in the second half and held Lake
County to just nine points. But, the Falcon defenders only allowed Peabody to
score 15 and take a 38-28 lead at the half.
Peabody stormed out of the gates in the second half though,
outscoring Lake County 33-16 in the third quarter despite another trio of
three-pointers from Ward. The Tide took a 61-54 lead into the final frame.
Lake County was able to rally early and cut the Peabody lead
to 66-64 midway through the frame. Peabody surged towards the finish,
outscoring the Falcons 16-1 down through the final moments to take the win.
Ward led Lake County with 18 points in the loss while Jax
Poole tossed in 17. Jataveion Ricks added 15.
Lake County returns to the court on Saturday night when the
Falcons and Lady Falcons welcome Union City to Tiptonville at 6 p.m.
