Things may have looked bleak for the Northview girls heading into the half down by eight until a strong second-half effort propelled the Lady Choctaws past Trenton, 32-29, on Monday night in Newbern.
After being shutout completely in the first quarter, the Lady
Choctaws had cut the Trenton lead back to eight thanks to four points from Landri
Stewart and Kenley Coleman. Northview dominated the third quarter as Stewart and
Jaliyah Watson battled through the Trenton defense to cut the Lady Bears lead
to 25-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
Stewart sank a three-pointer just 42 seconds into the final
frame to tie the game but Trenton answered with a quick bucket to go back out
in front. A layup from Northview’s Coleman tied the game before a deuce by Stewart
gave Northview a lead it would not relinquish with a three-point play. Though Trenton
scored a late bucket, Stewart sank two more free throws to seal the three-point
win.
Stewart led the way with 16 points while Coleman added nine
in the win.
Trenton boys 49, Northview 48
The script of the boys' game was similar but the roles were reversed
as a strong fourth quarter by the Bears prevented a Northview sweep.
After leading by as much as 11 during the first half, Northview saw its lead dwindle to three points at the end of three quarters thanks to the start of a second-half rally by the Bears.
Northview was able to keep its lead following a bucket from
Harrison Moore late in the contest. But, Trenton went on an 8-2 run through the
final minutes to take a four-point lead.
The Choctaws weren’t done as a Marcus Robinson bucket cut
the Trenton lead in half. A Stetson Swift steal with just under 20 seconds left
on the ensuing inbounds pass allowed Northview to set up for a game-tying
bucket. After a timeout with ten seconds remaining, a turnover proved costly as
it allowed Trenton’s CJ Porter to hit one of two bonus free throws to go up
three points with 9.2 seconds left.
Northview was able to get down the court and get a
three-pointer off but it missed. Malik Halliburton sank a late putback but didn’t
draw the foul the Choctaws needed on the shot as Trenton escaped with a
one-point win.
Moore led the way for 17 points in the loss while Swift
added 16.
Northview returns to action on Thursday when the Choctaws
and Lady Choctaws travel to Covington to take on Crestview at 6 p.m.
