Dyer County had a tough start to a short week with the
holiday season upon them as both the Choctaws and Lady Choctaws fell to Peabody
on Monday night in Newbern.
In boys action, Peabody pulled away late to take a 71-66 win
over the Choctaws to close out the sweep.
Dyer County trailed by three going into the final frame
before taking the lead early in the fourth quarter. Triston Seabourn led the
way for the Choctaws with eight points in the final eight minutes. But, after a
Seabourn bucket with 3:28 left in the game, Peabody went on a 14-5 run which
stretched into the final minute and sealed the win for the Tide.
Clay Dodds led the way for the Choctaws with 20 points while
Seabourn added 14. Grant West and Ryker Hayes each added 10 in the loss.
Earlier in the night, Dyer County was able to battle back-and-forth with the Lady Tide through the early portion of the final frame before a late Peabody run sealed the 56-51 win for the visitors.
The two teams traded the lead multiple times during the
final eight minutes. Dyer County recaptured the lead with a Julie Cogdill
bucket with two minutes left. Peabody played well down the stretch, outscoring
the Lady Choctaws 10-6 over the final two minutes to seal the win.
Cogdill led the Lady Choctaws with 23 points in the loss.
Dyer County returns to action on Saturday when both teams
travel to Huntingdon for the Point Guard Coca-Cola Christmas Tournament. The Choctaws
will play the University School of Jackson at 10:30 a.m. while the Lady Choctaws
take on Camden at noon.
