Dyersburg got its Christmas break schedule off to a good
start on Friday night as the Trojans held off Riverside to take a 68-56 win
over the Panthers in the Terry Glover Gymnasium to open the Charles Cowles Classic.
A trio of three-pointers comprised a strong performance from Jace Ward in the opening quarter to keep the Trojans on pace with the Panthers and play to an 18-18 tie after one quarter.
Ward got another bucket and a trey in the second frame while
Cam Rhines led Dyersburg with six points, including a 4-for-4 performance from
the free throw line. Those points came in handy as the Panthers rallied to cut
the Trojan lead to 31-27 at the half.
Thanks to an eight-point third quarter from Demonte Johnson as
well as a pair of Ward three-pointers, Dyersburg was able to build its lead
back to nearly double digits. The Trojans took a 49-40 lead into the final
frame.
In the final eight minutes, Ward went to work again. This
time, he accounted for almost half of the Trojan points in the fourth quarter
with nine in the final frame to help Dyersburg build its lead to a dozen by the
final horn.
Ward led the way for the Trojans with 29 points while Rhines
tossed in 17 in the win. Johnson added a dozen to give Dyersburg three players
in double figures.
Dyersburg returns to action on Saturday night to close out
the Charles Cowles Classic when the Trojans take on McNairy Central at 5:30
p.m.
