Lady Falcons rally to take overtime win over Bradford

The Lake County girls looked to bounce back from their opening round loss in the 2025 Lady Trojan Christmas Tournament at Dyersburg. While the Lady Falcons were able to pick up the win, the green and gold needed a rally and an overtime frame to get the 52-49 win over Bradford on Monday afternoon in the Terry Glover Gymnasium.

Lake County trailed by ten heading into the second half after a low-scoring first two quarters. The Lady Falcons were able to make up for this in the third frame as two players – JaMiracle Kinney and Yharia Bolden – equaled the team’s output from the first two frames with six points each in the frame. Laken Chism added five of her own to the effort as a late Kinney bucket gave Lake County a 33-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Bradford regained control of the game during the fourth frame as the Lady Red Devils opened the quarter with a 12-4 run to build a 43-37 lead heading into the final 90 seconds. Mariah Valentine cut the Lady Red Devil lead in half with a three-pointer but Lake County failed to get on the board on its next two possessions with a turnover and a missed shot. Valentine added a jumped to cut the Bradford lead to one. After the Lady Red Devils looked to seal the win with a long pass to and a layup by Abbey Glisson, Valentine struck again as her three-pointer as time expired sent the game into overtime tied at 45-45

A Glisson bucket early on put Bradford back up with 3:20 left in the extra frame. But, though the Lady Falcons hit only five of their nine free throw attempts over the next two minutes, Lake County was able to answer a pair of Bradford free throws with a late Bolden bucket to take a three-point lead with 20 seconds left. The Lady Red Devils went for the tie but a late steal from Valentine capped her clutch performance over the final six minutes of action as well as the Lady Falcons’ win.

Valentine led the way for the Lady Falcons with 12 points while Chism added 11 in the win.

Lake County will face South Fulton in the fifth-place 1:30 p.m. game at on the final day of the 2025 Lady Trojan Christmas Tournament on Tuesday in Dyersburg.

Trojans headed to Region 7-3A Championship for the first time in 21 years

  Jason Peevyhouse JP Productions Sports Thanks to a stellar second half which saw the Trojans outscore Haywood 45-23, the Dyersburg boys will play for a region championship for the first time since 2004 after the black and gold’s 68-55 win over the Tomcats on Tuesday night in Newbern. "I think our kids were extremely engaged from the tip," Dyersburg Head Coach Blaine Mahaffey said. "I thought we rebounded well all night.  "And then, in the second half, when we were able to play a little bit better offensively, I think it showed up more." Trailing by nine at the break, the Trojans cut it to eight early in the second half but a three-pointer from Haywood put the Tomcats back up 35-24 with just over seven minutes left in the frame.
