The Dyer County Choctaws and Lady Choctaws got their week off to a winning start on Tuesday but needed strong second-half efforts to do so against Lake County in Newbern.

In the opening game, the Lady Choctaws led by one at the half then built its lead over the final two frames to take a 74-53 win over the Lady Falcons. After jumping out to a big lead early in the nightcap, Dyer County had to fend off a fiery Lake County boys team in the second half on the way to a 79-63 win over the Falcons.

Though the orange and white led by 16 at the half, the Falcons battled back to cut deep into the lead before the Choctaws ended strongly to take the 16-point win.

The Choctaws were able to build their lead to nearly 20 points early in the second half but Lake County went on a tear through much of the frame. A quartet of three-pointers from Aikee Ward sparked the Falcons along with six points by Jataveion Ricks countered six points from Clay Dodds. The third-quarter performance by the Falcons cut Dyer County’s lead in half at 55-47 after three frames.

Lake County got five points from Ward and Jax Poole to help the green and gold effort in the final frame. But, Dyer County answered with a two-man show starring a pair of members from its senior class. Devin Hayward led the way with 14 points while Dodds added 10 to help seal the Choctaw win.

Dodds led all scorers with 27 points while Hayward added 17 in the win for Dyer County. Lake County was paced by Ward with 21 points including six three-pointers. Ricks added 19 while Poole tossed in 11 in the loss.

The Lady Choctaws turned their one-point halftime lead into a 21-point victory with a strong effort in the third and fourth quarters.

Following a low-scoring first half, Dyer County nearly doubled its scoring production in the third frame. Three Lady Choctaws scored six points each in the first eight minutes of the second half as Julie Cogdill, Alayna Leedy and Alexis Parkin accounted for 18 of Dyer County’s 26 points in the frame. Lake County was able to stay in striking distance thanks to Laken Chism’s seven points and four by Yhana Bolden as the Lady Falcons trailed 53-45 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dyer County’s Molly Roberts dominated the fourth quarter. The junior scored 13 points to help push Dyer County to the 21-point win.

Roberts and Cogdill lead Dyer County with 18 points each while Leedy tossed in 12 and Anna Tatum scored 11. Chism led Lake County with 20 points in the loss. Mariah Valentine scored 14 and Bolden tossed in 12 to help lead the Lady Falcon effort.

Dyer County returns to action on Friday when the orange and white travel to Milan for the Milan Holiday Tournament. The Lady Choctaws take on Camden at 2:30 p.m. while the Choctaws face Chester County at 5:30 p.m.
