TCA rallies to be Dyersburg Middle in Christmas Tournament final

Though the Lady Trojans led by five heading into the half, Dyersburg Middle’s girls were held to just ten points in the second half as Trinity Christian Academy came from behind to beat the black and gold 35-29 in the Lady Trojan Christmas Tournament Middle School Championship Game on Tuesday afternoon at Dyersburg.


Desleign Strayhorn was the spark for the Lady Trojans in the first quarter, scoring 11 of the team’s 13 points in the opening six minutes. Dyersburg took a 13-6 lead after one.

The Lady Trojans were held to just six points in the second quarter with four coming from Strayhorn. In the meantime, Trinity Christian was able to cut slightly into the Dyersburg lead during the low-scoring second quarter and trailed 19-14 at the half.

The scoring slowed down further in the third quarter as the two teams combined to score only ten points in the first six minutes of the second half. The Lady Lions scored six but Dyersburg got a bucket each from Strayhorn and Eakin and led 23-20 at the end of three quarters.

Dyersburg’s scoring woes continued into the final frame as the Lady Trojans were held to just a Jaslyn Thompson bucket over the first four and a half minutes of the fourth quarter. But, Dyersburg was able to answer a late pair of free throws from TCA’s Abby Porter with a layup by Strayhorn to go up 27-26 with 90 seconds left. The Lady Lions answered with a Jenna Wamell bucket to retake the lead then ended the game on a 7-2 run to secure the tournament title.

Strayhorn led the Lady Trojans with 23 points in the loss.

Desleign Strayhorn and Morgan Eakin were named to the Lady Trojan Christmas Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Eakin and Strayhorn were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Dyersburg Middle School returns to action on Monday when the Lady Trojans and Trojans travel to Crockett County beginning at 6 p.m.

But, a late touchdown by the Trojans forced overtime where a special teams became the most important part of the game as the Choctaws blocked Dyersburg’s extra point attempt then were able to score and sophomore DC kicker Jotham Powell hit a PAT for the 35-34 win to open the season. Trojans headed to Region 7-3A Championship for the first time in 21 years

  Jason Peevyhouse JP Productions Sports Thanks to a stellar second half which saw the Trojans outscore Haywood 45-23, the Dyersburg boys will play for a region championship for the first time since 2004 after the black and gold’s 68-55 win over the Tomcats on Tuesday night in Newbern. "I think our kids were extremely engaged from the tip," Dyersburg Head Coach Blaine Mahaffey said. "I thought we rebounded well all night.  "And then, in the second half, when we were able to play a little bit better offensively, I think it showed up more." Trailing by nine at the break, the Trojans cut it to eight early in the second half but a three-pointer from Haywood put the Tomcats back up 35-24 with just over seven minutes left in the frame.
