Choctaws end losing streak, girls' skid continues

The Dyer County boys got back to their winning ways in District 13-3A action on Thursday night as the Choctaws got out to a big lead early and led for all but just under two minutes of their 59-51 victory over Crockett County in Newbern.

Crockett County scored early with a three-pointer by Max Woods. Dyer County, however, scored often during the first frame. Triston Sebourn scored five of the first ten points for the Choctaws as a Jayden Tyler bucket put Dyer County on top 10-3 with 3:07 left in the first quarter. Crockett County was able to break the 10-0 run by the orange and white but a Seabourn dunk late in the frame capped a 6-0 run to put Dyer County on top 16-5 after a quarter.

The Choctaws were able to hold their double-digit lead through much of the second frame thanks to buckets from Clay Dodds and Ryker Hayes. Crockett County cut the deficit back to single digits late in the first half to trail 30-21 at the break.

The Cavaliers were able to cut further into the lead early in the second half as Crockett County battled back to trail 30-27 with 5:25 left in the frame. The Choctaws responded with a pair of Seabourn free throws as well as a dunk as part of an 11-4 run to build their lead back to double figures. The Cavaliers had a brief answer before a three-point play from Dodds and a Pereon Isom bucket put Dyer County up 46-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers were able to cut deep into the lead one more time with a quick run midway through the fourth quarter to trim the Choctaw lead to 52-48. But, a Seabourn bucket opened a 7-0 run to effectively put the game out of reach and seal the Dyer County win.

The Choctaws had lost three straight in the district before Thursday night’s win over the Cavaliers.

Seabourn led Dyer County with 17 points while Dodds added 11 in the win.

Crockett County girls 63, Dyer County 43

While another big quarter earlier in the night set the tone for the girls game, this big frame belonged to Crockett County as the Lady Cavaliers handed the Lady Choctaws their third straight loss.

An Alayna Leedy bucket with 6:55 left in the opening frame answered an early Crockett County three-pointer to cut the Lady Cavalier lead to one. Over the next six minutes, Crockett County outscored the Lady Choctaws 16-5 on their way to a 19-12 lead following a late bucket from Julie Cogdill and an Ava Pearson three-pointer.

During a lower-scoring second frame, Dyer County was able to slow the Lady Cavalier scoring, holding Crockett County to 11 points in the final eight minutes of the first half. But, the Lady Choctaws were only able to add four Cogdill points and a Kennedy Hill bucket to their side of the board and trailed 30-18 at the break.

The Lady Choctaws looked to climb back into the game and got two quick scoring sprees early in the second half. A Cogdill bucket trimmed the Crockett County lead to five before a pair of Keeton Holyfield treys pushed the Lady Cavalier lead to 42-31 late in the frame. Molly Roberts answered with back-to-back treys to cut the deficit back to 42-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

But, the fourth quarter belonged to Crockett County as the Lady Cavaliers opened the frame on a 20-3 run on the way to the 20-point win.

Cogdill led Dyer County with 14 points while Roberts added a dozen in the loss.

Dyer County is scheduled to travel to Brownsville on Friday night, Jan. 30, to take on Haywood at 6 p.m.
