Dyer County girls' season ends after early struggles against Haywood

A dismal shooting performance in the first quarter in the District 13-3A Quarterfinals in Medina on Wednesday night set the tone for a hard night for the Lady Choctaws as the Dyer County girls saw their season come to an end with a 54-46 loss to Haywood.

Dyer County took its only lead of the night early in the opening frame with a pair of Alexis Parkin free throws with 6:49 left in the first stanza. From there, the Lady Tomcats powered through the rest of the quarter with a 16-2 run to take a 16-4 lead after the opening frame.

The Lady Choctaws got their offense going in the second quarter with a free throw by Julie Cogdill and a three-pointer by Anna Tatum to cut the Haywood lead to single digits. Dyer County was able to climb as close as five points late in the frame before the Lady Tomcats rallied to take a 25-16 lead at the break.

A sluggish start to the third quarter by the Lady Choctaws allowed Haywood to take a 35-20 lead with 3:12 left after a Camariya Woodland bucket. Dyer County fought back, cutting it to eight after a Molly Roberts three-pointer and two Ava Pearson buckets. Haywood was able to take a seven-point lead late before a late steal and bucket from Pearson cut the deficit to 39-34 heading into the final frame.

Two three-pointers from Jakhia Hall pushed the Haywood lead to ten points early in the fourth quarter. The Lady Choctaws were able to overcome that and cut the lead in half after two Pearson buckets and another by Alaina Leedy cut the Haywood lead to five. The Lady Tomcats answered in a big way with a 7-2 run while also running valuable time off the clock on the way to the eight-point win.

The loss ends Dyer County’s season short of making the region tournament for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Pearson led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 16 points while Parkin and Cogdill tossed in eight apiece.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
