Following a layoff of nearly two weeks, the Lady Trojans wrapped
up their season of West Tennessee basketball with three games in four nights
which was capped by a dominating 54-28 win over Kirby Middle School in the TMSAA
Section 4AA Championship Game on Monday night in Memphis.
The Lady Trojans took control early. Despite allowing 11
points in the first quarter, the Dyersburg Middle girls countered with a dozen points
from Desleign Strayhorn and six by Taj Jones to lead the black and gold to a
21-11 lead after one frame.
With the Dyersburg defense holding Kirby to just six points
in the final six minutes of the first half, the Lady Trojans were able to add
to their lead in the second stanza. Six points from Strayhorn along with a
Micah Mclin three-pointer helped push the Lady Trojan lead to 34-17 at the half.
The black and gold defense continued to keep Kirby in check
and then some, holding the hosting team to just two points in the opening
quarter of the second half. Jones had a big third quarter, scoring 10 while Strayhorn
had six to give Dyersburg a 52-19 lead heading into the final frame.
From there, Dyersburg held off any rallies to take the
Section 4AA title for the second straight year, punching their ticket to the TMSAA
State Tournament this weekend.
Strayhorn led the way for Dyersburg with 24 points while
Jones was on her heels with 20 in the win.
The Lady Trojans will open the four-team TMSAA Class AA
State Tournament on Friday night at Rockvale High School at 8 p.m. Dyersburg
will take on E.O. Coffman in the state semifinals with a spot in Saturday’s state
championship game on the line. With a win, the black and gold will take on the
winner of Friday’s other semifinal between Prescott South and Gatlinburg-Pittman
in the finals at Stewart’s Creek High School on Saturday at 3 p.m. A loss would
send the Lady Trojans to the consolation game at Stewarts Creek Middle on
Saturday at 3 p.m.
