Lady Trojans win region, one win away from state tournament

A dominating start and a strong finish proved to be the difference for Dyersburg Middle School’s girls as a strong opening frame coupled with a 15-2 run to end the game punched the Lady Trojans’ ticket to the Section 4AA Championship Game on Monday with a 62-41 win over North Parkway on Saturday afternoon in Jackson.

A Taj Jones three-pointer just ten seconds into action set the tone for the first quarter as the Lady Trojans rattled off a 14-0 run to open the game with a Morgan Eakin bucket with 1:38 left in the frame capped the scoring spree. Jones added two more buckets late to help the Lady Trojans take an 18-3 lead after one quarter.


Dyersburg continued its dominating run into the second quarter. With five points from Desleign Strayhorn, the Lady Trojans extended their lead to 22 points with just under three minutes left in the half. The Lady Panthers were able to end the half stronger than they began it, cutting the black and gold lead to 33-18 heading into the half.

The Lady Trojan scoring slowed in the third quarter as Dyersburg was limited to just 10 points over the first six minutes of the second half. North Parkway continued to make up ground on the Lady Trojans, cutting the Dyersburg advantage to 43-33 after three frames.

Despite a layup by Dyersburg’s Jaslyn Thompason and a pair of Strayhorn free throws, the Lady Panthers cut the Lady Trojan advantage to six points with 3:36 left in the game.

But, a pair of layups from Strayhorn sparked a 15-2 run to end the game which was capped by a Jones three-pointer to seal the Region 6AA Championship for the Lady Trojans.

Strayhorn led the way for the Lady Trojans with 29 points while Jones scored 13. Thompson tossed in 12 in the win.

Dyersburg will travel to Memphis on Monday for the Section 4AA Championship Game at 6 p.m. where the Lady Trojans will take on Kirby.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
