Lake County opens postseason with win over South Fulton

The postseason for the Lady Falcons began the same way the regular season ended just a few nights ago as Lake County got off to a strong start on the way to a 58-41 win over visiting South Fulton in Tiptonville on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the District 14-A Tournament.

After an opening bucket from South Fulton, the Lady Falcon offense caught fire. Sophomore Laken Chism had the hot hand, scoring 10 of the Lake County points in a 16-3 run through much of the first stanza. The Lady Falcons took a 16-9 lead after one quarter.

South Fulton came out stronger in the second quarter, cutting deep into the Lake County lead, trimming it at one point to a four-point game following a pair of Alli Macfarland free throws. Lake County recovered and surged into the break thanks to a pair of three-pointers and a jumper by Chism as part of a 10-3 run to end the half and take a 33-22 lead into the break.


Lake County was able to push its lead to 15 early in the second half after a Yharia Bolden bucket with 7:01 left in the third quarter. The Lady Red Devils battled back and cut the Lady Falcon advantage to eight points with a 9-2 run. Again, the Lady Falcons had their eyes on keeping the South Fulton girls at bay as a pair of Jordyn Burpo jumpers helped Lake County take a 46-35 lead into the final frame.

South Fulton had one more rally in them as the Lady Red Devils cut the Lake County lead to seven with 6:35 left. But, another Burpo jumper sparked a 10-2 run to end the game and seal the win for the Lady Falcons.

Chism led the way for the Lady Falcons with 24 points while Mariah Valentine added 16 in the win.

The win puts Lake County in the District 14-A Semifinals where the Lady Falcons will take on defending Class A State Champion Greenfield on Thursday night at Bethel University at 6 p.m. Win or lose, the Lady Falcons are assured a spot in next week’s Region 7-A Tournament.
