Dyer County routs JCS with three-homer inning

Coming off their first loss of the season on Tuesday at Tipton-Rosemark Academy in a one-run setback, the Choctaws made sure offense would not be the reason for a defeat on Thursday at home against Jackson Christian School.

Dyer County’s softball team made short work of the Lady Eagles, accumulating 15 hits including a quartet of home runs in the orange and white’s 15-0 win in Newbern. Not to be outdone, Choctaw pitchers Rylee Key and Molly Kate Woody combined for a four-inning no-hitter in the mercy-rule win.

The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the first after opening the game with a 1-2-3 inning on defense. A one-out double by Emma Wray scored a run to get Dyer County on the board. Pitcher Rylee Key helped her own cause with a one-out double to put the Choctaws up 2-0 after one inning.

The bottom of the second began a string of three straight innings showcasing the Dyer County offense. Emma McGavock bunted her way on with a single the Kierstyn Ray reached on a base hit as well. A JCS error then allowed both runners to score and double the Dyer County lead. With the bases cleared, Wray homered to left to put the Choctaws on top by five. Later in the inning, Evie Rogers doubled in a run to give Dyer County a 6-0 lead after two innings.

In the top of the third, a walk led to the only JCS runner, who was quickly erased when the inning ended on a 6-6-3 double play.

Dyer County added to its lead in the bottom of the third. Kate Benedetto and McGavock led off with singles as the Choctaws got on board later in the frame with an error on a Wray flyball to center. Ray then singled in three to put the Choctaws up 10-0 after three innings.

The Choctaws put the game away in the bottom of the fourth and used the “longball” to do it. However, two of the three Dyer County homeruns were well-earned as McGavock and Katie Caldwell each had a two-run homer – both were clean inside the park roundtrippers. Key then finished off the Lady Eagles with a homer to left to seal the 15-0 win for Dyer County.

Key went 3-for-3 with a double and a homer and five RBI while McGavock had a 3-for-3 day as well with two singles in addition to her inside the park sprint with two RBI. Wray had a double and a home run while driving in two and Rogers had a double and a single with one run driven in. Ray added two singles as part of the 15-hit day for Dyer County.

Key picked up the win, pitching two innings and striking out three while Woody closed out the final two frames.

Dyer County will head to Henry County High School on Friday and Saturday for the Todd Latte Memorial Tournament in Paris.
