Dyer County’s softball team got its season off to a
successful start on Thursday night in Newbern, answering a pair of early
Munford runs with a flurry of their own on the way to a 9-5 win.
Two Munford hits and three Choctaw errors led to a 2-0 lead
after a half inning for the Lady Cougars.
Dyer County had an answer in its half of the first. A
leadoff walk to Kierstyn Ray was followed by an error which allowed Katie Beth
Caldwell to reach base with no one out. Rylee Key grounded into a fielder’s
choice to advance both runners into scoring position for Emma Wray. The Dyer
County catcher singled down the third-base line to score a run and tie the game.
Allie Ables followed with a two-run double to put the orange and white out
front. Two batters later following an Evie Rogers single, Natalie Armstrong
singled in two more runs to five Dyer County a 5-2 lead after one inning.
The Choctaws tacked on more runs in the bottom of the second
on a two-run homer to center field by Ables to put Dyer County up 7-2.
Munford answered with three runs in the top of the third but
Dyer County was able to get one of those back. Ray singled in a run to put the
Choctaws lead back to 8-5 after three innings.
Dyer County capped off its scoring in the bottom of the sixth
with a one-run double by Wray to put the Choctaws up 9-5 heading into the final
frame.
A trio of walks by Munford in the final frame kept things interesting but Rylee White shut the door on the Lady Cougars, getting a groundout for a force at home then struck out the final batter to seal the win.
Ables led a trio of Dyer County players with two hits as she
had a homer and a double with four RBI. Wray had a double and a single while
driving in two while Ray added two singles in the win.
Rylee Key picked up the win in the circle, allowing five runs
on six hits with two strikeouts in four innings. White held the Lady Cougars
hitless and scoreless over the final three frames, striking out three along the
way.
Dyer County returns to action on Monday when the Choctaws
host Westview at 6:15 p.m.
