Four-in-a-row! Lady Trojans knock off South Gibson for Region 7-3A title

The fourth time was the charm this season for the Lady Trojans as Dyersburg, having lost in three previous games to South Gibson, defeated the Lady Hornets 46-45 in the Region 7-3A Championship Game on Wednesday night at McNairy Central in Selmer.

The Lady Trojans trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter then fell behind 41-33 following four early points in the final frame. Dyersburg didn’t go quietly into the Selmer night though, rallying with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 41-41 late in the ballgame. But, South Gibson was able to pull ahead late thanks to a three-pointer by Karson Dunn. The Lady Trojans had an answer in the form of Class 3A Miss Basketball Finalist Chelby Jordan.

The Dyersburg standout senior drove in late looking for a shot but was fouled and sent to the free throw line with her team trailing 45-44 with 1.9 seconds left. Jordan hit the first free throw then appeared to put her team out in front with a second, only to have it waved off due to South Gibson calling a timeout. After the timeout, Jordan returned to the line and hit the second free throw to give her team a one-point lead with very little time on the clock. Following the inbounds pass, South Gibson was unable to convert as the Lady Trojans snapped their three-game losing streak to the Lady Hornets.

Dyersburg got a big first-quarter performance from Kay Kay Strayhorn with a pair of buckets and a three-pointer to help the Lady Trojans take a 12-10 lead after one quarter.

The Lady Trojans extended their lead in the second quarter thanks to six points by Jordan and a jumper and a trey from Strayhorn to lead 25-20 at the break.

South Gibson rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Dyersburg 17-8 to lead 37-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

Jordan led Dyersburg with 19 points while Strayhorn added 17 in the win.

With the win, the Lady Trojans not only win their fourth straight Region 7-3A title (their third in a row over South Gibson), but Dyersburg will also host Saturday night’s TSSAA Class 3A Sectional Game against Bolivar in the Terry Glover Gymnasium with a spot in the TSSAA Class 3A State Tournament on the line. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
