McCord steps down as Lady Choctaw head coach

With the state tournament currently going on in Murfreesboro, Dyer County will begin the search for a new girls head coach as Lady Choctaw Head Coach Derek McCord has stepped down from just the girls’ position at DCHS.

The move was announced on the Dyer County Choctaw Athletics Facebook page on Thursday afternoon, just one day before the school system dismisses for spring break.

McCord took over the Lady Choctaw program before the 2009-10 season. Though the team had losing seasons in two of his first three seasons, McCord and the Dyer County girls turned it around beginning in the 2012-13 season. The Lady Choctaws finished 19-10, finishing runner-up in the district tournament before losing in the regional semifinals.

The best season, record-wise, the Lady Choctaw had came in 2014-15 when Dyer County reached the regional semifinals with a 30-1 record. The next season, however, history was made as Dyer County reached the state tournament for the first time in school history in girls basketball. The Lady Choctaws lost in the quarterfinals of the TSSAA Class 3A Tournament, the first of three trips Dyer County’s girls made under McCord.

McCord leaves the program following back-to-back .500 seasons as the school’s all-time wins leader in girls basketball (as well as in boys) for a head coach. He spent 17 seasons coaching both girls and boys basketball for the orange and white, finishing with a 335-168 mark.

The release on the Dyer County social media pages stated “additional information regarding the future leadership of the Lady Choctaw basketball program will be announced at a later date.”
