Perfection achieved: Trojan Horner strikes out 10 in perfect game

For the second straight day, the Trojans gave the Ripley baseball team more than they could handle and this time it was punctuated by a six-inning perfect game from Dyersburg pitcher Brett Horner for an 11-0 win on the second day of the Aaron Schuh Tournament at Tom Mathis Field.

Horner went the distance for Dyersburg, striking out 10 of the 18 batters he faced while allowing no hits on zero walks without allowing a Tiger to reach base safely. Horner threw 42 of his 56 pitches for strikes in the perfecto.

Dyersburg got on the board in the bottom of the first as Alex Page’s two-out double was followed by an RBI single from Will Leonard to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead after one.

Two innings later, Dyersburg struck again with two outs in the bottom of the third. This time Page drove in a run with a two-out single. Ryan Wesson added an RBI base hit two batters later before Leonard scored on a passed ball to put the Trojans up 4-0 after three innings.

The Trojans tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth. Evan Thompson singled then scored on an error during the following at bat. Page picked up his third hit of the day with a home run to left which was followed by a Leonard round-tripper to put Dyersburg on top 7-0 after five innings.

Dyersburg put the game away in the sixth – again with two outs. JP Noblin singled in two then Leonard did the same two batters later to bring the mercy rule into play.

Page went 4-for-4 on the day with a single, two doubles and a homer with two RBI. Leonard had two singles and a homer with four RBI in the win.

The perfect game comes a day after Noblin and Lafe Morgan combined to hold Ripley to just one hit over five innings in a 10-0 in the Trojans’ season opener.

Dyersburg continues the Aaron Schuh Tournament on Thursday when the Trojans host Tipton Christian Academy at 7 p.m.
