Dyer County battles back to beat South Gibson

After seeing their two-run lead evaporate in the top of the fifth inning and finding themselves trailing heading into the bottom of the frame, Dyer County’s softball team answered with a quick rally aided by a South Gibson miscue to retake the lead on the way to a 4-3 win over the Lady Hornets on Tuesday evening in Newbern.

The win came without starting centerfielder and leadoff batter Kierstyn Ray while No. 2-hole hitter Katie Beth Caldwell batted only once before leaving the game with an injury.

Dyer County was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Allie Ables worked an 11-pitch at bat into a double to left. Freshman Kate Benedetto followed with an RBI single to center to plate her and put the Choctaws on top 1-0 after two innings.

The Choctaws added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Evie Rogers singled with one out then Emma Wray came through with a two-out single two batters later. Rogers scored moments later on an error to put Dyer County ahead 2-0 after three innings.


South Gibson, having been shut out for the first nine innings of the season home-and-home with the Choctaws, broke through in the top of the fifth. A two-run homer from Ashlyn Cannon tied the game at 2-2. The Lady Hornets took the lead on a Whittemore sacrifice fly to put South Gibson on top 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Dyer County made sure the visitors’ lead didn’t last long. Natalie Armstrong singled then Emma McGavock reached on an error to open the frame. But, a fielder’s choice and a pop up put the Choctaw rally in danger. Wray came through, reaching on an error to score two runs and put Dyer County on top 4-3 heading into the sixth.

After a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, Choctaw pitcher Ava Hart and the Dyer County defense worked around a pair of singles to open the seventh to get two fly outs and a strikeout to seal the win.

Hart went the distance for the Choctaws, allowing three runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Ables’ double was the lone extra-base hit for Dyer County in the win.

Dyer County returns to action on Wednesday when the Choctaws host Haywood in another District 13-3A game at 5:30 p.m.
