ICYMI: Lake County softball moves closer to .500 with doubleheader sweep

The Lady Falcons brought themselves to within two games of .500 by winning their second and third straight end the week with a doubleheader sweep of Greenfield at home on Thursday afternoon in Tiptonville.

Game 1: Lake County 13, Greenfield 3
Lake County answered a three-run top of the first from Greenfield with 13 unanswered runs to get the win in three innings.

Greenfield struck first, as Emma Coleman reached on an error then Aubrie Clark joined her on the basepaths via a fielder’s choice. After Coleman scored on a passed ball, Reagan  Reynolds followed with an RBI double to plate the Lady Jackets second run. Reynolds scored later in the inning on a passed ball to put Greenfield on top 3-0 after a half inning.

Lake County matched those runs in the bottom of the first. Lea Hopper singled then scored on a Kaitlyn Jones triple to put the Lady Falcons on the board. Aaliayh Shell reached on an error which allowed Jones to score then scored herself on Gentri Beal’s RBI double to tie the game at 3-3 after an inning.

The Lady Falcons got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the second then got the lead on a Bryleigh Walls RBI double. Hopper singled in a run then Shell plated another run with a base hit. Jones scored on a passed ball moments later before Beal singled in another run to put the Lady Falcons on top 8-3 after two frames.

Lake County brought an end to things in the bottom of the third. Jordyn Burpo singled in a run then Shell drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Lady Falcons on top 10-3. Beal then brought the mercy rule into play with a bases-clearing double to extend the Lake County lead to 13-3 and seal the victory.

Beal led the way for Lake County with two doubles and a single with five RBI while Jones had a triple and a single. Hopper added two singles in the win.

Walls picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Falcons, allowing three runs on two hits with five strikeouts in three innings of work.

Reynolds first-inning double was the only extra base it for the Lady Jackets in the loss.

Callie Harrington took the loss for Greenfield in the circle.

Game 2: Lake County 18, Greenfield 0

A 13-run first inning allowed Lake County to end the doubleheader early and complete the sweep.

Lake County scored a baker’s dozen in the bottom of the first. The inning which saw the Lady Falcons draw eight walks and have six batters hit by pitches, was highlighted by a two-run single from Beal. The green and gold took a 13-0 lead after one inning.

The bottom of the second went in similar fashion as six batters for Lake County went to the plate and all drew walks as the Falcons scored five times before the game was called.

Beal had Lake County’s only hit of the day with the first-inning, two-run single. Coleman’s leadoff single in the first was the only hit of Game 2 for Greenfield.

Kensi Hays picked up the win for the Lady Falcons while Greenfield’s Clark took the loss.

Lake County returns to action on Thursday when the Lady Falcons host West Carroll at 5:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Greenfield faces South Fulton at home on Thursday at 5 p.m.
